How 64 Shades of Color Lead to the Biggest Decision of My Life!

“What I love about Canada is that people here have the strength to acknowledge and stand up for the tougher things in life…this country humbles people in so many ways and at the same time unleashes their potential extraordinarily!”   says Taranum Khan

I come from Jammu and Kashmir, India which is known world over for its natural beauty and has been compared to “Paradise on Earth”. My fascination with Canada started when one of my extended family members relocated to Canada. On his visits home he would bring nice little gifts and tell us mesmerizing stories. I was especially fascinated with a box of crayons he brought back; the crayon box I had at home had 12 shades but he got a pack full with 64! Mind boggling isn’t it? In my teen world Canada established its identity as a place full of possibilities. Crayons- so many different shades, symbolic of an inclusive multicultural space; a magical land beckoning me.

In my Master’s program I got further captivated by Canada when I started reading about the Canadian literary landscape and the Canadian culture. I read Settlers of the Marsh by Frederick Philip Grove – it is the story of a man who comes to Canada for work, breaks the land and starts a new life. This was the beginning of my fascination with literature from the prairies and Canadian Literature became my calling.

I visited Canada twice before immigrating; the first time as a research scholar to attend the Canadian Western seminar in Calgary and two years later to represent University of Jammu, India in Toronto. Meeting warm, generous, welcoming and respectful people guided my decision to relocate.

Coming to Canada took nine years and by the time I arrived, life had changed in many ways; student days were long gone and I was leaving behind a trail blazing career at a renowned University in India. My family dynamics had also changed; I was married to the love of my life Altaf and had two adorable boys. In relocating we left behind an established and comfortable lifestyle because we wanted our children to grow up to become contributing members of the community.

I remember the excitement of relocating – how we were filled with hopes and dreams. But within these happy moments was also the shock of discovering that nobody knew us here or knew what we could offer. Over qualification and lack of a professional network were some of the initial challenges that I faced; I know all newcomers face these challenges. Culturally we are people who are humble and down to earth and we don’t talk about ourselves. It was a learning process to get used to talking about myself. Honestly, at times I still find it challenging but the only way to overcome it is to practice till it starts flowing naturally.

I did not walk this rope alone;  to name everyone who supported us would take up pages therefore I will say, “you know who you are and I am deeply grateful to you for your support, warmth, motivation and all you did”. However, I will mention three individuals who helped us in forming a strong bond with Canadian culture and community. Jakki BuckeridgeManager- Child, Youth & Parenting Department at Indus, Mitra SenFounder- Peace Tree International and Elizabeth WatsonEmployment Services Worker, Region of Peel. They played a huge role in the opportunities we got as newcomers and the milestones that we achieved. Most of all, my parents supported my decision every step of the way. They are my rock and I am what I am because of them.

What I love about Canada is its strength to stand up for the tougher things in life. Across the globe people don’t want to accept fault and rectify or change; most conversations are hushed or pushed under the carpet. Not in Canada! Here challenges are looked in the eye – we may not have all the answers but we take steps to resolve them.

The pace of life in Canada is fast and that makes life demanding. This place humbles people in so many ways, makes them appreciate the good things in life and at the same time unleashes their potential extraordinarily. I value working in social services as it offers tremendous scope to impact lives.

My most recent achievement is being nominated for “Outstanding Career Professional” 2017-Award of Excellence and my next exciting project is the publication of my book which is under way. As a last word I want to remind people to be positive – be willing to learn and apply. Canada has a lot to offer; it’s up to us to explore and reach new heights!
